A false hope can be to accumulate vast wealth–to be a billionaire. I think many Americans who are on the low end of the wealth spectrum are reluctant to give up this individualistic dream (which requires “free markets” with fantastic returns to make plausible a high octane fantasy). One manifestation of this is that they faithfully buy Lotto tickets on state run gambling operations hoping against hope that their photo will be in the papers showing a typical American family that hit it big. E pluribus unum. Thus, interdependency proves to be an ad hoc sham–capitalism in full display at its egocentric worst.
