The Lesson of Charleston

If you wanted to get back at an enemy, what would be your style?

  • a punch in the nose
  • a tongue-lashing
  • the silent treatment
  • a big dinner
  • other ____________

(Serendipity Bible Fourth Edition, page 531).

When will we ever learn the lessons presented to us by Charleston and earlier by Martin Luther King? Lasting change is not brought about by a punch in the nose, or a tongue lashing, or the silent treatment. Rather real change in human affairs is brought about by generosity and graciousness of spirit and by forgiveness. Enemies become friends through respect, consideration and kindness.  This is the fundamental law of love that undergirds American life and is endorsed, when we are honest, by our own inner nature.
