When we "let someone have it" there is often the assumption that we hold unassailable positions ourselves. This is so far from true as to be laughable. But, of course, I don't laugh when under attack--especially initially. More often than not I burn with anger. But as time allows me to gain a little perspective, I come to appreciate the value of my critic and often the motive from which their criticism derives which can be love on an elemental basis. Since they love me and think highly of me, it frustrates them immensely when they find I have feet of clay. Therefore, ironically, I come to love them even more when I consider their love for me and their high expectations.
