Describe a time when you saw a despised or neglected person receive a surprising amount of love and respect. (Serendipity Bible 10th Anniversary Edition, page 1348).
I have written of Marvin Sweat, a Methodist minister in his 90’s with an astounding degree of love and compassion daily expressed in his interactions with others. I have seen him embrace the “respectable” and the “unrespectable” with equal warmth—not only in “safe” environments (such as church) but with equal grace on the street and wherever he went. I only met with him regularly and widely for a short 6 months or so. But his tutelage is one of the most significant experiences of my life. With great clarity of mind he would introduce me as a preacher from First United Methodist Church—even though I was not so by all extant evidence. I was deeply appreciative of this intentional and insightful error, much as when he unfailingly in attitude recognized persons down on their luck as Mr. President.
