I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. (John 15:15 NIV).
We
all receive FYI’s regarding developments that might impact or
interest us—either the forthright kind saying “For Your
information” or the silent, devious, exclusionary ones
communicating “Fuck You Imbecile! You don't need to know a Goddamn
thing.” Which communiqué would you rather receive?
Those
in power and those knowledgeable occasionally wish to exclude others
sometimes unnecessarily and inconsiderately. This can cause
resentment and lead to unfairness in fact and feeling. Feeling “left
out” is one of the most powerful of all human emotions tapping
survival instincts. The preferred course is to communicate too often
rather than too seldom. We should worry more about our own betrayal
of trust and less about the conjectured ethical weaknesses of others.
If we must speculate when deciding which type of FYI to send, let us speculate about our own devious nature
and give others a well-deserved break.
